CRAFTERNOONS & CRAFT WORKSHOPS!

As well as our bustling markets, we are now hosting art & craft workshops – and Crafternoons! Our workshops and Crafternoons take place in various locations around the country. Please take a look below at our upcoming events and join us for some crafting! We try to keep our workshops as affordable as possible – and Free when we can!

What is a Crafternoon? It’s craft en masse!

A Crafternoon is a casual get together usually between friends (or soon to be friends) where you bring your own craft projects to work on. Our Community Crafternoons combine the concepts of a casual craft afternoon with a craft workshop. You can BYO a craft project, share your craft skills with a friend or a stranger, or learn from the Suitcase Rummage team and create a simple DIY craft project.

Since launching Suitcase Rummage five years ago, we are constantly amazed and inspired by the diverse talents and skills our Rummagers present when they host their stall at our grass roots market. We have seen first hand a renaissance of traditional arts and crafts, at one point in danger of dying out with our Grandmothers…

Traditional art forms and craftwork including pottery, weaving, needlework, spinning and sewing, as were once expressed creatively within everyday activities necessary for a household. These skills have found their way into the hearts and hands of a new generation, and we are excited to help foster and grow this movement!

As Betsy Greer said in 2003 when she coined the term, “Craftivism is a way of looking at life where voicing opinions through creativity makes your voice stronger, your compassion deeper and your quest for justice more infinite”.

What better way to share the Suitcase Rummage ethos, than to assist to facilitate a movement of consumer conscious DIY entrepreneurs and build a creative community!

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS!

As a part of our Pop Up Suitcase Rummage’s at BRISBANE POWERHOUSE we are hosting a monthly Crafternoon in the lovely greenery alongside the Rummage Market.

IT’S TIME TO GET CRAFTY!

Our workshop for September is making the old thrifty Rag Rug! Join Naomi Huntsman – The Sewloist – (and one of our very own Rummage team!) to learn the technique of making Rugs from up-cycled fabric and remnants.

Making Rag Rugs is a great way to up-cycle bed linen, old clothing, and to make use of your growing fabric stash. Using only a safety pin and strips of fabric you will learn to weave together a textural, colourful and beautiful rug!

We will provide a selection of fabrics to work with on the day, however you are more than welcome to bring your own along. If you do, please make sure it is lightweight woven cottons that can be torn easily into strips – this is how we make a Rag Rug.

Please note: This workshop gives you the starting point and technique for making rag rugs, the process of making a complete rug will take more than 2 hours. This means that you will be taking your project home with you to complete, but you will have the skills and know how to make it!

Who is Naomi Hunstman and The Sewloist?

The Sewloist is an Indie Sewing Pattern Company which endeavours to blend fashion, creativity and craftwork within a socially interactive and educational platform. By engaging women in the design and production process I aim to contribute to their skills development and empowerment through creation.

Based in Brisbane Queensland, each of The Sewloist designs are produced by Naomi Huntsman, in her solar-powered studio, with only the paper patterns being out-sourced to a local printing company.

Having studied and worked in fashion and dabbled in her own clothing label, Naomi soon realised the importance of sustainable practice both in business and everyday life. Seeking to create positive change and to provide a more meaningful experience when it comes to our relationship to clothing this Indie Sewing Pattern Company was conceived.

At www.thesewloist.com you will find various tips and insider knowledge to enable you to create well-made and individual clothing from a selection of exclusive Sewing Patterns, Projects and Tutorials.

You’re encouraged to share your experiences amongst like-minded people as we collectively foster a friendly and supportive online creative community.
