Stall Feature of the Month!

Stall Feature of the Month!

Introducing the one and only…. ash.leia!

We had a little chin wag with embroidery queen Ashleigh from Canberra. She’s been stitching up her year finishing school and weaving in as many markets as possible. What a creative and crafty lass!

Can you tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do? I’m currently studying my year 12 full time at the Canberra institute of technology and with any free time I have, I try to embroider something.

Why do you do what you do? I just thought it would be a great way to wear things that I draw. At first, I knew absolutely nothing about it, I hadn’t watched videos or gone to any classes, I just took a good guess on how to embroider and had a go. After the first t-shirt, I couldn’t stop.

Who are some other artists, crafts, creatives that you love? And why? My boyfriend, Caleb, is an amazing drawer, some of the things he puts out just blow my mind. We do markets together, he usually sells some dope second hand clothing and one day I might be able to get him to sell some prints at one!

What excites you? Getting new items to embroider on is one thing that excites me. It makes me start to think of new things to create.

We think of a rummage stall as a mini shopfront, how do you make your rummage stall your own? I love the concept of Suitcase Rummage, it makes things a lot easier to set my things up and pack everything up. I usually take one suitcase and a picnic rug of some sort and have everything laying out. I don’t really pre-plan how I will set up beforehand I usually just wait until I get there.

Can you offer any tips of setting up a rummage stall? I think it’s different for everyone but I’ll say make sure to get as creative as you can, you have tons of space and enough suitcases to achieve nearly anything.

What is the next step for you? What does the future hold? I’m not exactly sure just yet but I think I’ll keep up with embroidering, I have been doing it for a few months and find myself loving it more and more. Oh, I’d also love to go to one of the bigger cities to try and do a suitcase rummage stall there. That would be cool too.

What your favourite place or thing to do in your city? I like going to new places, even though I have lived here my whole life there are a lot of places I haven’t been to.

Where can we find and follow you?  I show all my recent work and what markets I will be at on my Instagram – @ash.leia and I put all my items that are available on my Etsy – ashhaddon.etsy.com/

What do you like about attending Suitcase Rummage? I’ve done the Suitcase Rummage a few times and have made so many great connections with some amazing people. The vibes are so chill and I always enjoy talking to people that appreciate the things I make. Suitcase Rummage has to be one of my favourite markets!
