Please meet our next Featured Rummage Re-Designer – Claire Humphrys!
Can you tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do?
I’m a bit of a legend in Melbourne. Many are still around who remember Gerry and I in the 60’s (the late Gerry Humphrys of iconic Oz rock band,The Loved Ones). We left for the UK in 72 after the first Sunbury, 20 years on I came back to Melbourne. Chrissie Amphlett’s book Pleasure and Pain pages 29/30 as I recall, we’re mentioned. I dyed her hair when she was still a girl. I do art on a daily basis, its like a compulsion, its always been that way for me. I do a lot of sketchbook work, putting down ideas.
Why do you do what you do?
I do it because I always have. It’s my way of getting through life in a meaningful way…recording the events/passions/experiences which affect me the most.
I began this particular series of art when I had a health scare, hence the Chicken with a bandaid on her left boob. I made the bra from the sheet music of Beethoven’s Fifth, depicting the drama of it all….Da Da Da Dum. I called it ‘Beethoven’s Fifth’ and they went on from there. I began with some of my own grandmother’s doilies to sew the little creature creations onto as a base, and they represent the 6 weeks of radiation therapy I underwent. Each little character has the feeling of the day I was doing it. Ive got a fine Art degree from UK so I know the processes of creation.
Who are some other artists, crafters, creatives that you love? And why?
I love so many different artists, in particular those who express their feelings through their art, that covers a lot of creators. I love Frida Kahlo, Munch, Chagall, Nolde, Beckman,Grosz, Dix etc…..
What excites you?
Travelling excites me, I’ve done a lot of it. Living in the UK for 20 years puts you close to Europe and Nth Africa. Distance is easier than from the Southern Hemisphere. I also get excited when I meet someone who ‘Gets me’ that enables me to be myself.
We think of a rummage stall as a mini shopfront, how do you make your rummage stall your own?
I guess my Rummage stall is an opportunity to once again express myself and also to engage with the participants who visit the stall. Im a people person and find it rewarding engaging with others.
Can you offer any tips on setting up a rummage stall?
Make it inviting, and make sure you’re going to be comfortable sitting there all market
What does the future hold?
The next step for me; to carry on creating, growing and adventuring from that. One thing leads to the next and whats around the corner will be great as its always been that way for me…….ones vibration determines ones outcomes.
What’s your favourite place or thing to do in your city, Melbourne?
I live opposite the Sandbar Cafe in Albert Park, it’s a cool spot. I like meeting friends there and watching the water and the children on the sand and the dogs, all of life passes on that beach. I feel content when I rest there. No pressure just serenity.
