A long-time collector and long-time lover of colourful things, the earrings that Sian makes with her partner, Nikita, fit into both those categories. They are oh so colourful and very much worth collecting. In fact, we would collect hundreds of them if we had more ears on our bodies. Sadly, we do not, but we can still appreciate the imaginative creations from Sian Makes Dangles. Have a read of our chat with Sian!
Can you tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do? Hi! I’m Sian and my partner Nikita and I share a love for two main things: earrings and clothes. We’re both uni students, and as a little creative side project we started hand-making statement polymer clay earrings and photographing them for our instagram @sianmakesdangles. It started as just an average crafternoon but now we absolutely love making them as often as possible, and have created hundreds of pairs of bright and colourful earrings! When we’re not making earrings, we looove rummaging through racks of clothes at op-shops for unique, statement pieces. I have been an op-shopper for as long as I can remember, and it’s so nice to see it slowly becoming a more recognised, appreciated and just-as-fashionable alternative to unsustainable, fast fashion clothing and retailers.
Why do you do what you do? Because it’s so much fun! Why else?! Designing and making clay earrings honestly feels like we’re little kids building play-dough creations- SUPER fun! It has been a really nice creative outlet for the both of us, and selling has become an awesome way to earn a little bit of extra moolah. And it’s so over-said but so true, second hand shopping is THE BEST way to find one of a kind pieces that nobody else has. It also means we can continually be trying new styles and pieces without breaking the bank or contributing to the detrimental effects of the fast fashion industry.
Who are some other artists, crafters, creatives that you love? And why? In terms of other earring makers, our definite long time favourites are Salvation Jewellery and Winter Bloom Design (check them both out on insta!) They are both just super creative and talented with clay and make bright and bold pieces that we love! Fashion wise, we are obsessed with YouTuber, Steal The Spotlight. She has an unbelievably cool and colourful sense of style, and puts her own twist on current trends. She’s also big on thrifting and second hand shopping (and we love a good thrift haul video) so that’s a bonus!
What excites you? Most recently as makers, it is exciting to see people enjoying our earrings. It is so surreal watching both friends and strangers taking an interest in something that we have put a heap of time and effort into creating!
We think of a rummage stall as a mini shopfront, how do you make your rummage stall your own? COLOUR!!! Which is kind of easy because majority of our earrings and clothes are ridiculously bright so we just try to display them in a way that’s going to invite people to have a look. We also love saying hey or having a chat to everyone that stops for a rummage. It’s a nice way for people to get to know us and want to buy from our stall. Plus we get to meet some really cool people!
Can you offer any tips on setting up a rummage stall? I think what we said above! Just try to set everything up in a way that’s visually pleasing but also accessible for everyone walking past! I know for me as a shopper, I hate (and usually won’t) step over/on stuff to get to something right at the back of a stall so try to make everything as in-reach as possible.
What is the next step for you? What does the future hold? Who knows! We’re just kind of going with the flow at the moment. Both of us work and study full time so hopefully we can find and maintain a balance between that and our little earring biz!
What’s your favourite place or thing to do in your city? We have a cute/gross tradition of having a picnic most Saturday mornings at Kangaroo Point Cliffs so probably that. It’s nice to relax there together so close to the water with a great view of literally the whole of Brisbane City.
Where we can we find and follow you? Check out some of our earring creations on Instagram @sianmakesdangles and visit us at a Suitcase Rummage in Brisbane!
What do you like about attending Suitcase Rummage? Alongside it being a nice little way to make some extra money (hi, poor uni students) it’s honestly just the most enjoyable experience. We have so much fun designing and setting up our little stall, and it’s such a strange but awesome feeling when someone loves and buys a piece that we have created or loved to wear ourselves. Plus, everyone involved is always super friendly and helpful and it’s so nice to be able to chat with like-minded people.
