Warning! The following stall feature is spoooooooooky! Just kidding, it’s a lovely little chat with Shantel and Ebony, two sisters who hand make all sorts of scary creations. Halloween is looming so if you’re in need of a gory accessory to match your second-hand costume, then make sure to check out their wares!
Can you tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do? We are The Bat Pack, (Shantel and Ebony) two sisters who run a small, unique handmade jewellery business inspired by Halloween. It all started when we were talking about how much we love Halloween, as we have an addiction to celebrating this yearly tradition, we wanted to make affordable accessories for like-minded people while also spreading our joy for Halloween all year ‘round!
Can you tell us about your wares? We love to accessorise, so we cover a wide range of jewellery types including necklaces, brooches, rings, earrings, bracelets, hair clips, and bows! Most our jewellery creations are made of polymer clay, which is an oven baked clay that hardens during the cooking process. Currently, our focus has been on making necklaces, bracelets and brooches but we have expanded into making other creations such as small statues for home décor, fabric cases for sunglasses/reading glasses and keychains to accessorise a lovely bag or attach to your housekeys.
Why do you do what you do? Because we love to craft. In a world filled with normies, be a crafter! We really love to bring Halloween spirit into everyone we meet. No matter how little you enjoy the Halloween season, I think we have something for everyone… and if not then bring on the challenge.
Who are some other artists, crafters, creatives that you love? And why? In general, we are massive Tim Burton and Alfred Hitchcock fangirls, because who isn’t?! But more specifically we love to see other handmade crafters on Instagram (even if they aren’t specifically Halloween based) they are doing what they love and it’s those people who are truly inspiring. Crafters such as; ‘Love Pain and Stiches’, ‘Clubby Clutter’, ‘Clayziness’ and ‘The Twisted Pumpkin’ are amazing.
What excites you? Halloween… next question… Honestly, we love to be at the markets amongst customers and to see their smiling faces when they see something that we’ve created brings them joy, it’s a beautiful thing
We think of a rummage stall as a mini shopfront, how do you make your rummage stall your own? We love to decorate. But we always have a simple decoration such as a pumpkin or skull, bat cut-outs or spider webs… OH and the FAKE dead human hand… always brings attention to the table.
Can you offer any tips on setting up a Rummage stall? Always prep yourself beforehand. We usually take a whole day to prepare everything from products to display to table cloth and change bag. Make a list and check it twice! Having a day before the Rummage really helps save time as you can notice things more when you’re in your element as opposed to an outdoor setting, with heaps of distractions around you.
What do you like about attending Suitcase Rummage? It’s a friendly environment and we always end up making friends with other stall holders. If you’re ever stressed or nervous about it there’s no need to be… if you need help, the organisers are always willing to help or someone will try and help you.
What’s your favourite place or thing to do in your city? We live for GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art) and the Museum. We love to see other artists’ work and be in awe of their creations and to get inspiration from their minds.
