Glittery and bold earrings to adorn our lobes with? Do tell us more! Renata channels her creative energy into a low key (but oh so sparkly) side project called By Ren, which she juggles on top of three other jobs! Her creations have a retro feel and would ideally be worn with an 80s Lycra outfit while dancing to Jane Fonda (in our fantasies, at least). Here’s our chat with the Melbourne creative.
Can you tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do? Hi! My name is Renata and I dabble in handmade accessories. Right now I’m tinkering with pretty dangly earrings, but I also make and sometimes sell bowties! I have lost track of how many Suitcase Rummages I have been a part of but can safely say it has been over four years since my first stall.
Why do you do what you do? I work a lot (three jobs that are in no way craft related) so making things with my hands is an outlet and something that really helps me unwind in my downtime. I’m pretty crazy about statement earrings, so I started off making them for myself. It’s a bonus that I have supportive people around me that encourage me to take my hobbies that little bit further and showcase them to the wider public!
Who are some other artists, crafters, creatives that you love? And why? Beci Orpin, Takeawei, Rachel Burke. I could list so many! I love their design aesthetic and can always recognise their work.
What excites you? Colour, glitter and the thrill of the search!
We think of a rummage stall as a mini shopfront, how do you make your rummage stall your own? I like to use vintage suitcases, astroturf, tinsel and lightbox signs to pretty up my stall.
Can you offer any tips on setting up a rummage stall? Price your items and work out signage, at least, the night before. It makes set up so much easier! As a ‘rummager’ I can get overwhelmed with piles of clothing, so finding a way to showcase your wares is something I’d suggest considering. Pick out some showstoppers and display them or fold/arrange items so that they are easy to spot.
What is the next step for you? What does the future hold? Refining my earring range and showcasing them at more markets, or working out a way to encompass all I make under one brand.
What’s your favourite place or thing to do in your city? Searching for the best filter coffees and donuts (Everyday Coffee, Market Lane and Shortstop are my fave go-tos) & attending craft markets!

What do you like about attending Suitcase Rummage? The sense of community, the market ethos and the excitement behind never knowing what gems you are going to find!
